From the Principal's desk

Our college was founded in 1939 with quite a noble mission of educating and enriching poor Muslim girls, enlightening and emancipating them. Gradually it has emerged as a multi-cultural institute for students from varied backgrounds. It has in the mean time put on a number of feathers on its hat.
I wholeheartedly believe that two most important factors behind the all-round development and success of this College are:

(a) a long tradition of a very strict discipline and

(b) a total absence of any kind of external interference. This is probably reflected in the consistently brilliant academic performance of our students both during and after their College days.

The College Building in it's initial days

The journey began almost eighty two years ago from a rented house (106A, Park Street) situated in the same Park Circus area where Lady Brabourne College is located today. It was in March 1938, that Hon’ble A.K. Fazlul Huq, the then Prime Minister of undivided Bengal, announced the establishment of a Purdah College to address the issue of Higher Education among Muslim women. Subsequently on 26th August,
1939 the Governor of Bengal, Sir John Woodhead laid the foundation stone on a spacious plot in Park Circus where the College shifted in 1941 to its present premises at P-1/2 Suhrawardy Avenue, Kolkata – 700017. It was soon named Lady Brabourne after the lady who had been instrumental in making Huq’s efforts become a reality. Doreen Knatchbull Lady Brabourne was the wife of Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull Brabourne (Lord Brabourne), the late Governor of Bengal. Initially meant for Muslim girls, the College opened its doors to non-Muslim women the very next year i.e. 1940 as “it was decided that 40% of non-Muslim students would be taken”.

Accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and awarded an ‘A’ grade in 2006.
Re-accredited by NAAC in 2014 again with Grade A.
Re-accredited for the 3rd consecutive cycle in 2022 again with Grade A.

ADVANCED RESEARCH CENTRES

The six Postgraduate Departments of English, Bengali, Physics, Mathematics, Microbiology and Geography were each sanctioned Advanced Research Centres by the University of Calcutta in 2014.
