UG Course
Admission : 4-Year B.A. / B.Sc. Major Courses (Honours with or without Research)
Under Curriculam and Credit Framework, 2022

The Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, has launched the Centralised Admission Portal for admission to UG courses for the session 2024-25. Admission to UG courses offered by Lady Brabourne College will be conducted through the Centralised Admission Portal.

All admission-related information and relevant notifications will be available at the Centralised Admission Portal: https://wbcap.in and on the college website: www.ladybrabourne.com. Lady Brabourne College offers Major in 19 subjects for the semester-wise 4-year B.A. /B.Sc. (Honours with or without Research) courses (under CCF, 2022). A candidate will have to choose any one of the following subjects as Major:

Humanities & Language Discipline (B.A.) Major Subjects Bengali, Economics, English, Geography, Hindi, History, Persian, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, Sociology, Urdu
Science Discipline (B.Sc.) Major Subjects Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Zoology

There is no provision for admission to B.Com., B.Ed., or Multi Disciplinary (General) Courses. Admission is strictly merit-based.

Students from ISC, CBSE, WBHSC, and other boards, approved by the University of Calcutta, are eligible for admission to this College. Foreign students may also apply through the University of Calcutta.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria for application to all the UG courses offered by the college as well as the Merit Index calculation formulae are given on the Centralised Admission Portal.

Merit List for all courses offered will be published on the Centralised Admission Portal. The College follows government statutes regarding admission of candidates belonging to S.C. and S.T. categories in each course vide Govt. Order No. DRSC/T /165 /2000 / 6(A).As per the West Bengal State Higher Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act 2013, G.O. No. 746-L, dated 30th April 2013, seats are reserved for persons belonging to Other Backward Classes of Categories A and B. The list for Other Backward Classes-Category A and Other Backward Classes-Category B may be determined and notified by the State Government from time to time.

SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B candidates from outside West Bengal will not be considered as Reserved Category. They may apply for admission as unreserved candidates.

As per memorandum No. 339- Edn (CS) /OM -74 L /2023, dt. 26-05-2023, seats are reserved for persons belonging to Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

Candidates seeking admission under reserved categories should produce valid certificates issued by competent authorities during verification of documents.

For Persons with Disabilities (PwD), reservation will be maintained as per the relevant norms (vide G.O. No. 1084 (20) – Edn (U) /EH /1U-89/ 13 dated 07.12.18 of Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal). Candidates seeking admission under PwD category should produce valid certificates issued by the competent authorities
during verification of documents.

Admission to the UG courses is subject to merit position of candidates in the course wise Merit List and available seats in each course and each category. Hostel accommodation is available for eligible candidates.
All online admission is provisional and is subject to verification of relevant documents. The college reserves its rights to cancel a candidate’s admission if the documents are not found in conformity with the declaration made in the form submitted online.

It must be noted that if a candidate cancels her admission to a particular course, she cannot claim seat in that course later.

Affiliation:
The College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta for the two-year M.A. / M.Sc. Courses. There are 10 Post Graduate Departments – 7 in Science and 3 in Arts.

Computer Facility:
All the Science PG Departments are well equipped with separate computer laboratories having required software and internet facilities.

Library Facility:
All Science and Arts PG Departments have rich seminar libraries for the benefit of the students besides the facilities offered by the Central Library of the College.

Advanced Research Centres

Six Post Graduate Departments have Advanced Research Centres, approved by the University of Calcutta. The primary objectives of the Centres are to interact and collaborate with National and International Centres of Excellence, to promote inter-disciplinary research, and to publish Occasional Research Paper series periodically. The six Research Centres are as follows:

  • Advanced Research Centre for Indian Writing in English (under Department of English)
  • Centre for Advanced Research on Human Geography (under Department of Geography)
  • Advanced Research Centre for Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology (under Department of Microbiology)

  • Centre for Advanced Research on Condensed and Soft Condensed Matter (under Department of Physics).
Post Graduate Course in GEOGRAPHY

Laboratory Facility:
The Department is well equipped with surveying instruments, water and soil testing and mapping instruments. Aerial Photographs Interpretation is taught with sufficient number of stereoscopes. The Department makes satellite images available to the students for visual interpretation and is planning to introduce Image-Processing classes as well. The Department possesses sufficient number of GPS handsets for training the students.

Excursions:
The Department arranges excursions for the students. It is compulsory for all students to participate in these excursions. The cost of the excursion has to be borne by each student. At least two Faculty member accompanies the students going on excursion.

Ph.D. Research Supervision:
Candidates can enroll for research for Ph.D. degree under the supervision of certain faculty members. In such cases the candidate will be registered under Calcutta University.

Ph.D. Guidance:
Candidates can enroll for research guidance for Ph.D. degree under the guidance of certain faculty members. In such cases the candidate will be registered under Calcutta University.

Advanced Research Centre for Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology:
Calcutta University approved the Advanced Research Centre for the Post-Graduate department of Microbiology with other 5 PG Departments of the College. The Centre promotes scientific temper and encourages collaborative intra and inter-college research work. The Centre has organized series of lectures, Symposia, Faculty Improvement Programmes and Workshops for students, Research Scholars and teachers of this College as well as other colleges, throughout the year.
A 5 year interdisciplinary project awarded by DBT BUILDER to the department of Microbiology in 2022. As a result several instrument have been procured for advanced research. Several instruments have been procured from the DBT BUILDER grant awarded for funding an Interdisciplinary Project with Microbiology as one of the beneficiaries.

Research Activities:
The Faculty members are actively involved in Environmental, Industrial and Medical Microbiological Research in the Department. A one-year Post Graduate Vocational Course on “Food & Drug Safety” sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been launched in 2010 – 2011. The duration of the Course period is from September to August every year. The minimum eligibility criterion for admission to this Course is B.Sc. in any field in Biological Science (Honours).
The Course has been sponsored by the University Grants Commission and the Diploma will be conferred by the University of Calcutta.

The Post Graduate Department of Mathematics got the approval from University of Calcutta to establish an “Advanced Research Centre” in 2014 which helps to expand the research facilities to the students. Inter disciplinary research has also been developed. A research wing was established so that students can do their research works under the guidance of the Faculty members of the Department as well as reputed teachers of different Universities and different Research Institutes.

Laboratory Facility:
The Department is well equipped with fully air conditioned computer laboratory containing 25 computers with Internet and LAN facilities and an overhead projector for UG, PG students and Research Scholars.

Seminar Library:
Apart from college library the Department has a seminar library containing more than 300 books (Only Mathematics) for UG and PG students.

Excursion:
The Department arranges excursion for the students every year to build up teacher student bonding. The cost of the excursion has to be borne by each student.

Departmental Facility:
Classrooms dedicated for Post Graduate teaching of both General and Special Papers are equipped with facilities such as Overhead Projector and DLP Projector.
The Department has a PG Seminar Library well equipped with advanced level books to meet the academic requirements of Postgraduate teaching/ learning. In addition, 33 Lady Brabourne College the Chemistry section of the Central Library also has numerous advanced level books on the subject.
In addition to the Faculty of the College, renowned Faculty from other Universities/Institutes and Colleges are also invited to teach advanced topics for the PG course.

Laboratory Facility:
Dedicated Laboratories with modern infrastructural and instrumental facilities compliant with all required safety norms for Post-Graduate practical classes. Instruments available include, colorimeter, conductivity bridge, pH-meter, polarimeter, potentiometer, UV visible spectrophotometer and high precision digital balance for accurate quantitative weighing. A separate computer laboratory is available for programming classes / project preparation.

The Department is well equipped with modern instruments. The Department has a Herbarium with old and rare collection of herbarium sheets, Museum, Molecular Biology Laboratory, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Medicinal Garden etc.

Excursions:
The Department arranges excursions for the students. Based on the plant collected in the field, each student is required to submit a field report, which is a compulsory part of the examination at the P.G. level. It is compulsory for all students to participate in the excursions arranged by the Department. The cost of the excursion has to be borne by each student.

Research Activities and Ph.D. Guidance:
The Department is also committed to quality based advanced research on Plant tissue culture, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. The Department has as its faculty, highly qualified and experienced scientists devoted to advanced research with ongoing three Major Research Projects funded by the Dept. of Science and Technology, and (West Bengal) Biotechnology Candidates can enroll for Ph.D. degree under the guidance of certain faculty members.

Laboratory Facility and Other Infrastructure:
The Department has well equipped laboratories with instruments such as UV spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, Microscopes, ultracentrifuge, refrigerated centrifuge, centrifuges, autoclave, BOD incubator, oven, bomb colorimeter, electrophoresis kits, Gel Doc, Mini Cold Lab, Elisa Reader, Sonicator, UV transilluminator, -20°C refrigerator, pH meter, digital balance, etc. and the necessary infrastructure to meet the academic demands of the students. The Department also has a well stocked museum with innumerable animal specimens, slides, illustrative charts, etc. The Department boasts of a very well-stocked library and net-enabled computer for students’ use.

Research Activities and Ph.D. Guidance:
The Department is also committed to quality based advanced research with stress on fundamental research in its pursuit of advancement of knowledge in Science and Technology. The Department has as its faculty highly qualified and experienced scientists devoted to original and path breaking research with Projects funded by the UGC & DBT. Candidates can enroll for research guidance for Ph.D. degree by certain faculty members. In such cases the candidate will be registered under Calcutta University or Vidyasagar University.

The PG Department of Political Science, Lady Brabourne College, has signed four MOU’s with the Political Science department of the following colleges, namely:

  • Shri Shikshayatan College, Kolkata.

The Post Graduate Students are given scope to explore research areas in various fields with visits to institutes like SRFTI. An Advance Research Centre on Indian Writing in English holds interactive programmes and promotes research publications.

Advanced Research Centre:
An Advanced Research Centre for Indian Writing in English, accredited by the University of Calcutta was established in 2014. The Centre has organized a series of Talks and Presentations, a State Level Seminar and a Translation Workshop for the Post Graduate students besides a Panel Discussion on Films and Literary Adaptations . Several Webinars at local and International levels in collaboration with institutes of repute have been organized. The Centre has published a collection of critical essays titled Indian English Literature: New Landscapes. ISBN: 9788177680294.

Library Facility:
Other than the College Central Library this Department has 2 Seminar Libraries, each for the UG and PG sections. A section of PG Seminar Library is known as Debipada Bhattacharjee & Reba Bhattacharjee Sangraha. We are grateful to the family members of late Prof. Debipada Bhattacharjee, former V. C., Rabindra Bharati University as they donated 250 books of Bengali language and literature to PG seminar library.

Ph.D. Guidance:
Some faculty members are presently supervising the ongoing research (Ph.D.) in the department and some students have also been awarded their Ph.D. degree.

In consonance with the demands of the employment sector the College offers the following 4 Self-financing Courses so that the students might be better equipped with professional training and a Diploma Certificate. লেডি ব্রেবোর্ন কলেজ এবং টাইমস অফ থিয়েটারের যৌথ উদ্যোগে, এ বছর দ্বিতীয়বারের মতো অডিও থিয়েটার কোর্সটি অনুষ্ঠিত হলো । কোর্সটিতে ক্লাস হয়েছে চার মাস। এছাড়াও ছাত্রীরা অডিও নাটক লেখা শিখে নাটক লিখেছে এবং অভিনয় করেছে। অভিনয়ের রেকর্ডিংও হয়েছে। এই উদ্যোগে তাদের মানসিক উন্নতির সঙ্গে সঙ্গে প্রথাগত পড়াশোনার বাইরে নতুনভাবে জীবনকে দেখার, জীবনে প্রতিষ্ঠা পাবার পথ খুলে দেওয়া হয়েছে।

A one-year Post Graduate Vocational Course on “Food & Drug Safety” sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been launched in 2010 – 2011. Duration of the Course

The B.A./B.Sc. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of Four (04) years Eight (08) semesters (with an exit option after completion of 2nd/4th/6th Semesters).

Disciplines and Types of Subjects

There are 2 broad Disciplines: (i) Humanities & Language, (ii) Science.

i. Major

The college offers Major in 19 subjects for the semester-wise 4-year B.A./B.Sc. (Honours with or without Research) courses (under CCF). A candidate will have to choose any one of the following 19 subjects as Major:

iii. Interdisciplinary Course (IDC)

A student will have to opt for three subjects as IDCs (one in each of the first three semesters) from a pool of subjects offered by the college in the different disciplines. These subjects must be different from the major and minor subject.

iv. Skill Enhancement Course (SEC)

SEC courses are based upon skill enhancement. Students shall study 2 SECs based on Major subjects in 1st and 3rd semester. In the 2nd semester the student can study Artificial Intelligence (for Science discipline) or Digital Empowerment (for Humanities & Language discipline) or as specified in the syllabus of the concerned Major subject as prescribed by the University of Calcutta.

v. Common Value-Added Course (CVAC)

A student shall take 4 CVAC courses. In the 1st semester she will take 2 compulsory CVACs (ENVS & Constitutional Values). In the 2nd semester there shall be 1 compulsory CVAC in ENVS & the students shall select the other CVAC from a pool of courses as decided by the affiliating university.

vi. Ability Enhancement Course (AEC)

All students shall have to study 4 AEC courses. There will be a compulsory AEC, named Compulsory English which shall be studied in the 1st and 2nd semesters and there will be an optional AEC (Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Alt. English) to be studied in the 3rd & 4th semesters.

* There is NO provision for admission to Multi-disciplinary (General) / B.Ed / B.Com courses.

The Women’s Studies Centre, Lady Brabourne College holds regular programs related to genderstudies and gender activism. Some of the most recent activities are as follows:

A cancer Awareness Programme held in collaboration with The Bengal Obstetric and Gynaelogical Society and the Rotary Club on 3rd August 2024 was meant for students, staff as well as for community outreach in the nearby areas.

The Centre has organised a 7 day International Interdisciplinary Workshop titled “Bridging the Gulf: Gendering Empowerment and Progress”, to be held online from 19th September, 2024 to 25th September, 2024. The workshop shall focus on themes of gender empowerment, gender equity and gender justice, among others, and shall include a wide range of perspectives on gender across various disciplines.

The Centre also plans to reintroduce self defense training foor both studentsand teachers in 2024-2025.

Dr. Swati Sarkar Memorial Endowment Lecture Series

This Lecture Series organized by the Department of Physics is in the memory of Dr. Swati Sarkar, an alumnus of Lady Brabourne College (1965-68).

Dr. Sarkar did her Post graduation from the University of Calcutta and obtained her Ph.D from R.E.C. Durgapur. She retired as Professor of Chemistry, SSLNT College, Dhanbad.

This Lecture series is supported by the Swati Dyuti Endowment Fund initiated through the benevolent contribution of Mr. Aveek Sarkar, son of Dr. Swati Sarkar.

Dr. Moumita Mukherjee obtained her B. Sc and M.Sc from University of Calcutta. After post-graduation, she obtained her Ph. D from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science under Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Meanwhile she visited Queen Mary, University of London for one year and Konkuk University, Seoul, South Korea for two years for research work. In her research career, she obtained UGC Meritorious fellowship, DST WOS-A fellowship and CSIR-RA fellowship. Currently she is working as a post-doctoral researcher under DST-Women Scientist Scheme at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, Kolkata.
