Undergraduate Courses

The college consists of 20 departments in various disciplines in the Arts and Science streams, all of which conduct both honours and general courses excepting the Computer Science department which only offer general course and Geography and Microbiology which only offer honours courses. Computer Science was introduced in 2007 and provides another attractive combination option for the honours students of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics.

B.Ed Course is not taught at Lady Brabourne College.

Students are admitted only to honours courses and are required to select a major subject as honours along with two subsidiary subjects. In addition, two languages also have to be studied. While any of the twenty subjects listed under ‘Departments’ may be taken as honours excepting for Computer Science, the choice of subsidiary subjects is restricted to certain combinations. From 2006 the college follows the new (1+1+1) system of examination as stipulated by Calcutta University.

The academic session is reckoned from June to May of every year, and all academic programmes including examinations are listed date-wise in an academic college calendar published annually.

Students are accepted from all Indian boards as well as from abroad. Admission to the Degree courses usually begin after the results of the Higher Secondary Examinations conducted by the Council for the Higher Secondary Education, West Bengal are published. Admission is conducted strictly on the basis of merit. In some cases candidates may be required to sit for written tests in their intended honours subject.

Geography

A M.Sc. course in Geography was introduced in November 2003 under the affiliation of Calcutta University. The total student strength is 27 per batch. The department offers special papers on Regional Planning and Population Geography and Welfare study in second year. A well equipped GIS laboratory is available to the students.
The Department is well equipped with surveying, water and soil testing and mapping instruments. Aerial photograph interpretation is taught with sufficient number of stereoscopes. The Department has satellite imageries available to the students for visual interpretation and is planning to introduce image processing classes as well. The new syllabus being formulated has included classes on the use of GPS for map making. The Department possesses sufficient number of GPS handsets for training the students. 

Microbiology

A post graduate course following syllabus of Calcutta University (semester system) in Microbiology (affiliated to the University of Calcutta for M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry) is offered since 2005. The number of seats for this course is 15. The department arranges short courses on Genetic Engineering and Microbial Biotechnology conducted by reputed organisation. Students of this department participate in a one and a half month long project work in the department itself during their third semester. 

Mathematics

In 2006, Dept. of Mathematics started a specially designed 2-year MSc. course affiliated to Calcutta University with an availability of 20 seats. The course has been designed with a focus on applications to Computer Science and Mathematical Modeling in various fields. Special papers on Operations Research and Mathematical methods in soft computing are being offered in second year. 

Physics

The College was granted permission by the Higher Education Department, Governmenrt of West Bengal and the University of Calcutta to open its PG programme in Physics. Initially 15 seats have been approved for the course which admitted its first batch of students in November 2007.The syllabus being taught is that prescribed by Calcutta University. Condensed Matter Physics is offered as a special paper. During the fourth semester, each student has to carry out project work on theoretical/experimental area. The College is indebted to S.N.Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata for offering support by way of grants for equipments. Faculty support may also be forthcoming. 

Botany

Dept. of Botany has started Post Graduation course from 2016. Number of seats in this course is 15 and admission is according to the rules of Calcutta University. There are four semesters in the course and the syllabus of the post graduation course is same as syllabus of University of Calcutta. Classrooms and laboratories dedicated for post graduate teaching are well equipped with modern instruments. The department has a PG Seminar library with advanced level books to meet the academic requirements of Post Graduate teaching and learning .The department has a Herbarium with old and rare collection of herbarium sheets, Museum, Tissue culture laboratory, Molecular
biology laboratory, Biochemistry laboratory, Computer laboratory and medicinal garden. In addition to faculty members of the department, renowned faculty from other Universities and Institutes are invited to deliver lectures on advanced topics of the course.

Departmental Facility: Classrooms dedicated for Post Graduate teaching of both General and Special Papers are equipped with facilities such as overhead projectors and LCD screens to enable power-point deliberation by Resource Persons.

The Department has a PG Seminar Library well equipped with advanced level books to meet the academic requirements of Post graduate teaching/ learning. In addition, the Chemistry section of the Central Library also has numerous advanced level books on the subject. In addition to the Faculty of the College, renowned Faculty from other Universities/Institutes and Colleges are also invited to teach advanced topics for the PG course.

Laboratory Facility: Dedicated Laboratories with modern infrastructural and instrumental facilities compliant with all required safety norms for Post-Graduate practical classes. Instruments available include, colorimeter, conductivity bridge, pH-meter, polarimeter, potentiometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer and high precision digital balance for accurate quantitative weighing. A separate computer laboratory is available for programming classes / project preparation.

Zoology

The M.Sc. course of the Department of Zoology was initiated in 2016 following the Calcutta University syllabus with 15 seats. Our first batch passed out in 2018 with all securing first class. The department has spacious smart class rooms and e-classrooms equipped with modern teaching aids to accommodate students perfectly and well equipped modern laboratories furnished with up-to-date sophisticated instrumentation facilities to conduct the practicals, project work as well as Research. The course offered Ecology and Endocrinology as Special Papers. Besides the well experienced full-time faculties, renowned faculties, scientific personalities and academicians from different famous Universities and Institutions are engaged as Guest Faculty and take regular classes. In 2018, the course switched over to the new syllabus under the CBCS system of the University of Calcutta. Three students have already cleared NET, two cleared GATE and one student has qualified GRE and TOEFL. One of the students has joined IICB, Kolkata for her Ph.D. Students are encouraged to take up project works and to participate in different seminars where they make scientific poster presentation based on the project work. The course aims at developing the scientific temper of the students and encourage them to pursue research in emerging fields of Biology.

ARTS

Post- Graduate Course in Bengali Language & Literature

Session : The Academic session extends from July to June. This period is divided into two semesters (each of six months duration).

Total no. of Semesters : four

Admission : According to the rules of Calcutta University.

Syllabus : Syllabus framed for the course broadly follows that of the Calcutta University. Compulsory Paper offered as per Calcutta University syllabus.

  3. Drama

Examination : On the completion of each semester a student is required to appear for an examination of 250 marks. An internal exam of 40 marks in MCQ
method will be held both in all four semesters. Each student has to submit a dissertation paper of 40marks & viva-voce of 10 marks in 4th semester. There will
be a compulsory field work of 20 marks in 2nd semester.

Library Facility : Other than the college general library this department has 2 seminar libraries each for UG & PG sections. A section of PG seminar
library is known as Debipada Bhattacharjee & Reba Bhattacharjee Sangraha. We are grateful to the family members of late Prof. Debipada Bhattacharjee, former V. C., Rabindra Bharati University as they donated 250 books of Bengali language & literature to our PG seminar library.

Ph. D. Guidance : Candidates can enroll for research guidance for Ph.D. degree by three (3) faculty member. In such cases the candidate will be registered under Calcutta University.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE ADVANCED RESEARCH CENTRE :
Calcutta University approved an Advanced Research Centre in favour of Post-Graduate Bengali department with other 5 PG departments of our college . This centre hopes to broaden its area of activity by entering into various collaborative projects and research work. The centre has organized series of lectures throughout the year . Two of them are Sri Jatish Ch. Datta endowment lecture & Sri Pran Krishna Bhattacharjee endowment lecture .
Moreover this centre has digitized version of rare Bengali samaik patrika like Sanibarer chiti , Dasi , Bangadarshan. From 2017 this centre publish a peer –reviewed ISSN journal funded by higher education department, Govt. of West Bengal.

Post Graduate course in English

The Department of English offers a two-year PG course approved by the University of Calcutta. There are 8 papers comprising:

The syllabus focuses on the English literary tradition from medieval to modern times. It opens up at the same time various new areas such as Indian Writing in English, Literature and Gender, Post- Colonial Theory and Culture Studies, Literature and Visual Arts etc. The number of seats for this course is 15.

Post Graduate course in Political Science

Post Graduate course in Political Science was introduced in the year 2016 with 15 seats. By pursuing this course the students of this Department have found career opportunities in the academia, non-government sector and in the corporate sector. The teaching faculty for PG in Political Science includes the Principal of Lady Brabourne College, Prof. Siuli Sarkar and five other Faculty members of the Department of Political Science. Besides there are also invited lectures by distinguished Professors from different Universities. Most students have performed very well in their Masters examination thereby securing a First Class. The PG course has come under Centralised CU CBCS system since 2018.

Apart from regular courses under the University of Calcutta, Lady Brabourne College currently runs 4 Self-financed Career Oriented Diploma Courses with an objective of training students for a future career. The curricula of the courses are designed to suit the demands of the employment market. Computer Diploma Course

  • Diploma in Computer Applications: This course, running since 1996 in collaboration with Webel, West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd. (A Govt. of West Bengal Undertaking) – WIL Division, is spaced out through 3 semesters. The curriculum has been subjected to regular review from time to time according to the changing needs of the students. Separate syllabi for the humanities, the bio-science and the pure science disciplines have been framed to suit the requirements of the students. The motivation behind running this course is to give students proper grounding in the versatile use of computers against minimum effort and expense.

Course Content of Computer Applications

Spanish Language Diploma Course

  • Diploma Course in Spanish Language: The advent of globalization has opened new avenues in a multitude of areas.  Since effective communication is one of the important keys to succeed in this era, the college in collaboration with WTCC School of Trade & Communication, a foreign language training institute under Development Consultants Private Limited, has taken up the initiative of creating a facility for learning Spanish language. This course is running since 2007 with an aim to create a foundation of understanding, conversation and basic writing skill of Spanish among the trainees. Considering the huge number of Spanish language speakers all over the world, a diploma in Spanish language would surely add to the students CV.

UGC approved Diploma Courses in:

  • Public Relations and Advertising
  • Multimedia and Animation

Both these courses were introduced in 2010 with UGC’s approval and seed money. The courses are run in collaboration with Webel, West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd. (A Govt. of West Bengal Undertaking) – WIL DivisionMaintaining a good interface with the public, planning strategies and campaigns, and dealing with public enquires and dissemination of information are important aspects of any organization. Herein comes the importance of “Public Relations and Advertising” as a field of study. Today, this field promises to generate huge job opportunities and the diploma course in “Public Relations and Advertising” will enable the students to step in the employment arena with confidence.  Personal grooming, soft and interactive skills are an integral part of the course. Helping the students to develop such skills, with excellent faculty and infrastructure to boast of, is the objective of this course. “Multimedia and Animations” is an equally potent field. India has now come to possess an ever-expansive animation industry with an increasing demand for trained talent for the growth of the industry. In view of this, the college offers this diploma course on “Multimedia and Animation” with updated international-level syllabus and distinguished faculty. The course aims at helping students acquire the required expertise essential for the Multimedia and Animation industry. The course will not only nurture the latent creativity of the students but will also help to channelize it towards meaningful realization through technological applications.

The curricula of both these courses aim at the development of soft skills in students for a successful professional career. The duration for both the courses is 4 semesters and the total course fee for each course is Rs. 4500 only.

FOOD AND DRUG SAFETY

One year Post Graduate Course For Microbiologists / Nutritionists – Both Girls and Boys.

This is the first time (2011) one Post Graduate Vocational Course on ‘Food and Drug Safety’ has been introduced for Microbiologists/ Nutritionists in Kolkata. Those who are not willing to join M.Sc or Ph.D programme in Microbiology/ Food and Nutrition may join this programme of one year and after completion of which they will be ready for a job. The syllabus of the course is designed in such a way that the candidate will become suitable for a Food Analyst or a laboratory assistant post or a post for the technician of a Food Analysis or, a Food Processing or a Food Manufacturing company or a drug Analysis or a Drug Manufacturing Industry. Duration of the Course is from July to June.

The Course has been sponsored by University Grants Commission and the Diploma will be conferred by University of Calcutta.

Two batches have already passed and well established , Third batch has appeared in the examination in 2014.

The last date for application for the Food & Drug Safety Course has been extended to 31st July as the B. Sc Result of Calcutta University has not been published yet.
The First Phase of Admission will be done on 19th July, 2014 from 11-00AM to 1-00PM at the Department of Microbiology.
The second phase of Admission will be done on 1st of August 2014 at the same time and at the same venue.

Original documents of University Examinations, SC/ST certificate and date of birth and an amoumt of Rs 12,000/- are to be carried during the admission process.

REMEDIAL COURSE FOR S.C./S.T. AND MINORITY COMMUNITIES

UGC-sponsored Remedial Classes for SC/ST and the Minority Community was implemented from 27th September, 2008 in order to nurture and uplift the slow learners, so that the student is equipped to safeguard her interests. It has successfully completed nearly eleven years benefiting the minority students. Dr. Jahan Ara of the Department of Persian was appointed as the Co-ordinator of the course till her retirement. At present Dr. Shabana nasreen of the Department of Urdu and Dr. Samapti Ghorai of the Department of Sanskrit are the Joint Co-ordinators and Dr. Suchita Sinha of the Department of Botany and Dr, Sukanya Chakraborty of the Department of Chemistry are the Joint Treasurers of the Program.

According to the UGC norms the remedial classes begin one month after the admission of the students to the college. In the course of teaching process during regular class lectures, slow learners and under achievers are identified by the Head of the Departments and the professors of the departments. They keep a record of the academically poor students and it is their responsibility to address the problems of the weaker students and looks into the academic, motivational and social adaptation pattern of the student.

Objectives

Remedial Coaching is organized with a view to:

  • Improve the academic skills and linguistic proficiency of the students in various subjects.
  • Raising their level of comprehension of basic subjects to provide a stronger foundation for further academic work.
  • Strengthening the knowledge, skills and attitudes of these students enrolled in subjects where quantitative and qualitative techniques and laboratory activities are involved so that the guidance and training provided under the program may enable the students to come up to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies efficiently.

Monitoring of the Course

  • The Coordinator of the program supervises the work under the scheme at the institutional level. Separate registers are maintained for different subjects.
  • Remedial classes are organized on Saturdays and the zero periods.
  • Lectures are delivered in very simple English and also explained in the mother tongue of the respective communities.
  • Regular class tests are taken after ten hours of teaching.
  • Group Discussions are conducted with a topic assigned to different groups of girls chosen by the students.
  • At the end of each academic year, the Coordinator submits, through the Principal, an appraisal report, indicating the performance of each candidate. The appraisal report indicates:
    1. The duration for which the coaching was organized, classes / period and the number of candidates who actually participated in the program.
    2. The subjects in which the students were tutored, names of teachers and their subject discipline.
    3. The number of the candidates who actually appeared in the examination.
    4. The number of the successful candidates in each paper.

 

Nature of Financial Assistance received

The College received grants under the following heads:

  1. Recurring:
  • Honorarium to the Coordinator @ Rs.1000/- per month and for Theory Classes @ Rs.250/- per hour, per subject to teachers, including retired teachers or Rs.150/- per hour, per subject to postgraduate students / research scholars. Rs.75/- per hour has been sanctioned for Practicals. However, in exceptional cases, where an eminent educationist is invited for special lecture, the remuneration of Rs.500/- per lecture and admissible Travelling Allowance could be paid, with the approval of the Head of the Institution.
  • Payment to Part-time LDC (Lower Division Clerk) with Computer knowledge @ 18,000/- per annum.
  • Contingency @ Rs.10000/- per

 

Infrastructure Facilities available

  • The library of the Remedial Section presently has approximately over 1000 books in different subjects. Books are issued to the students and are allowed to be kept till their final examination.
  • Computers with internet access are made available to the students.
  • A photocopier machine has also been installed for making copies of study material

 

How the College has benefited from the Remedial Program

  • The classes have elicited keen interest in the students, and have shown positive reflection in the results of college and university examinations.
  • It is expected that as the course continues there will be more positive reflection in the results at all levels of the academically challenged learners of the college.
