The IQAC has taken pioneering step to encourage teachers to improve academic writing.among teachers of the Institution.
It planned and promoted a research based, peer reviewed academic journal to create space for quality writings in humanities, social sciences and physical, biological, earth and other sciences taught in the college.
The first issue was brought out in 2010.
Since then the journal has become a regular fixture of the college’s research activity.
Reputed scholars of concerned disciplines form the panel of reviewers.
Editors maintain total integrity and transparency and only those papers passing quality tests make the grade.
The Journal has been assigned ISSN Number.

Vision & Mission of the Institution:

The vision of the Institution is Empowerment and Emancipation of its women student. The Institution aims at nurturing a student who enters its Portals in adolescence and guiding her through her Undergraduate years to a sense of maturation and self-belief. It watches over the flowering of their personalities to further refinement in the Post Graduate years in ten of its PG departments. The road towards emancipation and empowerment is inclusive and holistic. The Institution makes an effort to develop value- based mindset, intellectual perception, social and environmental sensitivity, health awareness through varied meaningful and participative programmes which goes far beyond the pure academic pursuits of designated syllabus.

CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF PROF: ASIMA CHATTERJEE BY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY & WOMEN’S STUDIES CENTRE: INSPIRATIONAL INITIATIVE.

In an inspiring and motivating initiative, the College’s Department of Chemistry and its Women’s Studies Centre collaborated to celebrate the Birth Centenary of Prof Asima Chatterjee, the first Indian lady to be awarded Ph.D. for her pioneering work on chemical plant work and synthetic Organic Chemistry on 10th November 2017. Achievements

Chatterjee’s contributions to science include the following:

Initiated chemical investigation of alkaloids in Rauwolfia canescens.
Investigated the chemistry of almost all principal types of indole alkaloids.
Contributions to the elucidation of the structure and stereochemistry of ajmalicine and sarpagine.
First suggested stereo-configuration of sarpagine.
Isolated and characterised geissoschizine, a key precursor in biogenesis of indole alkaloids from Rhazya stricta.
Carried out synthetic studies on a number of complex indole, quinoline and isoquinoline alkaloids.
Developed procedures for the preparation of beta-phenylethanolamines in connection with alkaloidsynthesis.
Elucidated the structure of luvangetin isolated from Luvanga scandens.
Studied the action of various Lewis acids on prenylated coumarins and devised simple synthetic routes to a number of complex coumarin systems.
Investigated the mechanism of acid-catalysed hydramine fission of beta phenylethanol amines.
Introduced the use of periodic acid as a reagent for the detection and location of both terminal and exocyclic double bonds in organic compounds.

Career

She joined the Lady Brabourne College of the University of Calcutta and founded the Department of Chemistry there. In 1954, Asima Chatterjee joined the University College of Science of the University of Calcutta, as Reader in Pure Chemistry.

Awards and recognition

She was a Premchand Roychand Scholar of the University of Calcutta.
From 1962 to 1982, she was the Khaira Professor of Chemistry, one of the most prestigious and coveted chairs of the University of Calcutta.[1]
In 1972, she was appointed as the Honorary Coordinator of the Special Assistance Programme to intensify teaching and research in natural product chemistry, sanctioned by the Indian University Grants Commission.
In 1960, she was elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.
In 1961, she received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in chemical science, becoming the first female recipient of this award.
In 1975, she was conferred the prestigious Padma Bhushan and became the first female scientist to be elected as the General President of the Indian Science Congress Association.
She was conferred the D. Sc. (honoris causa) degree by several universities.
She was nominated by the President of India as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from February 1982 to May 1990.
On 23 September 2017, the search engine Google deployed a 24-hour Google Doodle in honour of the 100th anniversary of Chatterjee’s birth.

The Celebration included addresses by Prof. Chatterjee’s eminent scientist daughter and son-in-law, Professor Julie Banerjee (former Khoira Professor, Department of Chemistry, University College of Science & Technology, University of Calcutta) and Prof. Avijit Banerjee (former Professor, Department of Chemistry, University College of Science & Technology, University of Calcutta)respectively, Dr. K.P Dhara (former Faculty, Department of Chemistry, University College of Science & Technology, University of Calcutta) & Dr. Chandrakala Dutta (Associate Professor, Department of History, Muralidhar Girls’ College, Kolkata). A documentary on the life & accomplishments of Prof. Asima Chatterjee was also screened in the college auditorium for the students. The students of the College received a valuable exposure not only to an advanced scientific mind but the manner in which a woman made ‘gender’ inconsequential in her pursuit of intellectual inquiry. The young minds of the College were thrilled to learn that their alma mater prepared the ground for Prof. Asima Chatterjee’s meteoric rise in the international arena of scientific research. In a very literal way they experienced the reality of woman empowerment and emancipation through higher education.

IQAC VALUE EDUCATION PROGRAMME USING PERFORMING ARTS

Banner of the IQAC Value Education Initiative in Collaboration with the Department of English The IQAC organized a Single Character Performance Yajnaseni Agnikanya, executed by eminent Theatre Personality and Alumnus of Lady Brabourne College, Smt Bijoylakshmi Barman on 24^th August 2018 as its initiative to create interactive space for the College students to absorb values immortalized in the great traditional epic Mahabhrata. Smt. Burman brought to life the events of the Epic from a woman’s point of view. The students identified with the challenges, resolutions and personal sacrifices of Draupadi the iconic female character of the epic Mahabharata. The medium of theatre used as channel for Women Empowerment and Value Education generated widespread and spontaneous interactive interest. The initiative helped the Institution to move towards its mission and vision in a very successful way and encouraged the IQAC to consider ‘out-of-the box’ propositions while working at its goals.

SEVEN DAY WORKSHOP OF ADVANCED RESEARCH CENTRE OF PG DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI

Glimpses of Eminent Speakers of the Seven Day Workshop

Rabindranath Tagore Advanced Research Centre , a wing of Post- Graduate Department of Bengali organized a Seven days Workshop on MEYEDER PATH CHALA : UNISH O BISH SATAKER BANGLA (The Journey of Women: 19^th & 20^th Century Bengal) from 12^TH March – 18^th march ,2019 in collaboration with West Bengal State University and partly financed by Department of Higher Education & Department of Women & Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal.

The Workshop addressed various women-centric issues in a socio-economic context and the students of the College were exposed to stimulating debate, discussions, question-answer sessions in the company of around seventy expert speakers and participant teachers and students from Colleges situated in different parts of West Bengal. The Programme with its unique and varied exposure in the form of audio and visual experience and live interaction with women from a cross section of society-privileged, unprivileged, married, single, intellectual, physical labourer, film personalities, singers, scientists actually translated the vision of Women Empowerment and Emancipation into something tangible and attainable for the students of the College.
